History and Legacy
The Gold Panda was first released in 1982 by the People's Bank of China as an official bullion coin.
The Chinese Gold Panda was introduced in 1982 as China's first official bullion coin, designed to compete with international coins like the Krugerrand and Maple Leaf. Since its launch, it has become one of the world's most popular investment coins, especially in Asia.
What makes the Panda unique is that each year features a different design of the panda bear on the reverse (with the exception of 2001 and 2002, which shared the same design). This annual feature makes the Panda not just a gold investment but also a coveted collectible piece for numismatists worldwide.
Originally, the Panda was minted in troy ounces (1 oz = 31.1035g), but in 2016 China switched to metric denominations. Now the standard version contains exactly 30 grams of pure gold instead of a troy ounce. This change aligned the coins with the metric system used in China.
The giant panda is a national symbol of China and an endangered species. The coins celebrate this national treasure and raise awareness about its conservation. The Temple of Heaven in Beijing consistently appears on the obverse as another Chinese cultural icon.
