History and Legacy
The Centenario was first minted in 1921 to commemorate the centennial of the consummation of Mexican Independence.
The Mexican Centenario was born in 1921 as a commemorative coin for the centennial of Mexican Independence (1821-1921). Its initial mintage was limited, but due to its popularity and beauty, the Casa de Moneda de México continued producing it in later years, especially during the 1940s and 1950s.
Interestingly, although all coins bear the date '1947', many were minted in subsequent years until 1972. This was done to maintain design continuity and comply with monetary regulations. Starting in 2000, its minting was restarted with updated dates for investors and collectors.
The coin features the Angel of Victory, also known as the Angel of Independence, an iconic monument located on Paseo de la Reforma in Mexico City. The design was created by engraver Emilio del Moral and has remained virtually unchanged since its creation.
The Centenario is one of the most recognized gold coins in Mexico and Latin America, used for both investment and family savings. Its content of 37.5 grams of pure gold makes it one of the largest bullion coins in the world, exceeding even the standard troy ounce.
