History and Legacy
Introduced in 2006, the American Buffalo is a tribute to the iconic 1913 five-cent coin designed by James Earle Fraser.
The American Gold Buffalo was released on June 22, 2006, becoming the first 24-karat gold coin (.9999 purity) minted by the United States Mint. This marked a historic change, as traditionally U.S. coins used 22-karat alloys.
The design pays homage to the legendary Buffalo Nickel (1913-1938), considered one of the most beautiful coins ever produced in the United States. The original artist, James Earle Fraser, was inspired by three real Native Americans for the obverse and Black Diamond, a bison from Central Park Zoo, for the reverse.
The decision to mint in pure 24-karat gold was in response to investor demand who preferred gold without alloys, similar to other popular bullion coins like the Canadian Maple Leaf and Vienna Philharmonic.
Each Buffalo coin has a face value of $50 and is legal tender in the United States, although its intrinsic value based on gold content far exceeds this denomination.
